In our previous article, we explored one of the most important truths about acne: healthy skin doesn't need to be fought—it needs to be supported.
Acne isn't simply a matter of excess oil or dirty skin. It's often your skin's way of communicating that something is out of balance, whether that's changing hormones, environmental stress, dehydration, sensitivity, or the natural aging process.
But here's something equally important:
Not all acne is the same.
After more than 40 years of treating every skin type imaginable, Immunocologie founder Karen Ballou has learned that understanding why you're breaking out is just as important as the products you choose.
A teenager experiencing their first breakout has very different skin needs than someone navigating hormonal changes, stress-related congestion, or adult acne. Yet the goal remains the same: support the skin barrier, maintain hydration, and work with your skin—not against it.
In this guide, Karen shares some of the rituals she has developed over four decades of caring for skin, along with the professional insights she continues to teach clients today.
Because healthy skin is intelligent.
And when we give it the right support, it has an incredible ability to find balance.

Karen Ballou's Universal Acne Tips
Teen Acne
Learning to Find Balance
Teenage skin naturally produces more oil as hormones change. One of the biggest misconceptions Karen encounters is that acne means skin is dirty. It doesn't.
Hormonal changes increase oil production, but what often makes breakouts worse is using products that are too harsh.
"When you strip the skin of its natural oils, it often responds by producing even more oil to protect itself," Karen explains. "That can lead to more congestion, irritation, and breakouts."
Rather than trying to dry the skin out, focus on consistency, hydration, and supporting a healthy skin barrier.

-
Finish every cleanse with cool or cold water to visibly calm and refresh the skin.
Hormonal Acne
When Hormones Speak Through Your Skin
Hormonal acne often appears during monthly cycles, periods of stress, pregnancy, postpartum changes, perimenopause, and menopause. These fluctuations can increase oil production and contribute to recurring breakouts, particularly around the chin and jawline.
Rather than constantly changing products during flare-ups, Karen recommends maintaining a consistent ritual that focuses on calming inflammation, replenishing hydration, and supporting the skin barrier.

Adult Acne & Stress Breakouts
Supporting Skin Through Stress and Aging
Adult acne can be especially frustrating because it often appears alongside another challenge—skin that is naturally becoming drier and less resilient.
Unlike teenage skin, mature skin needs nourishment while also addressing occasional congestion and breakouts.
"I always encourage my clients to think beyond the breakout," Karen says. "The goal isn't simply to eliminate blemishes; it's to build healthier skin."
Stress, travel, lack of sleep, and environmental exposure can all contribute to inflammation and congestion. During these times, resist the urge to over-cleanse. Instead, focus on restoring balance.

Dry, Congested & City-Stressed Skin
When Life Shows Up on Your Skin
Travel, pollution, sunscreen, makeup, long days outdoors, and changing environments can all leave skin feeling congested—even when it's dehydrated.
Many people assume oily and congested skin doesn't need hydration, but healthy skin functions best when moisture levels are maintained.

Post-Breakout Care
Supporting Healthy-Looking Skin After a Breakout
Even after a blemish has healed, your skin continues its natural renewal process.
This is the time to focus on hydration, barrier support, and patience. Picking or over-treating the skin can prolong recovery and make post-breakout marks more noticeable.

Healthy Skin Is Intelligent
Whether you're caring for teenage acne, navigating hormonal changes, recovering from stress-related breakouts, or supporting skin through the natural aging process, one thing remains true: healthy skin doesn't respond well to force.
Over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, and stripping away the skin's natural defenses often creates even more imbalance.
Instead, focus on supporting your skin with gentle cleansing, consistent hydration, mineral-rich ingredients, and rituals that strengthen the skin barrier over time.
As Karen Ballou has taught for more than 40 years, every breakout tells a story. When we take the time to understand what our skin is communicating—instead of trying to silence it—we create the conditions for healthier, more resilient skin.
Because healthy skin is intelligent.
And beautiful skin begins with supporting its natural ability to thrive.
