Spring Reset – Tips for Smart Skincare

I know most people equate the start of a new year with a commitment to healthy habits. For me, the start of spring provides much more motivation to assess my habits and regimens, set goals, and stick with changes. When a new year starts, it is winter, cold and dark, and I feel lucky if I am able to keep up with my routines. But spring’s warmth, sunny skies, and new blooms provide the motivation and encouragement I need to reassess, grow and commit to changes.

While sun protection is important year-round, use the transition into spring to be sure you are prepared for your upcoming sun protection needs. Strive for a minimum SPF 30 for daily use on any exposed skin. If outdoors for longer periods, plan ahead for how you will reapply. I love powder SPF products for afternoon reapplications on the face if you are wearing makeup. If you are relaxing or exercising outdoors, reach for at least an SPF 50 and remember to reapply every 1 to 2 hours. Better yet, incorporate sun protective clothing and try to stay in the shade. Wear a wide brim hat for additional face, ear, and scalp protection. Powder sunscreens can also be used on the part for protection.

Check the expiration dates of your SPF-containing products, and replace those that are past their prime. Check your sun protective clothing for thinning. If you can see through the material, it is not protecting your skin. Lastly, do not keep sunscreen in the car where heat works to reduce potency of protection.

Use the beauty of spring to take stock of your nutrition, evaluate your skincare regimen, prepare for sun exposure, and recommit to a beautiful you from the inside out.

Spring is also a great time to ensure your nutrition and topical products are helping protect your skin from the increased ultraviolet exposure of spring and summer. Consider amping up the antioxidants you are getting through your diet by sipping green tea and focusing on eating colorful vegetables and fruits. While whole foods are always the best source of antioxidants, consider supplements if you feel your diet may be deficient. I incorporate a supplement containing Polypodium Leucotomos, Vitamin C, and pomegranate into my routine if spending the day outside or on a sunny vacation, just to be safe. Vitamin C containing topical products are great to use year-round, but a must during spring and summer under SPF to provide topical antioxidant protection to the skin.

With the transition to warmer weather, changes in skincare products are often needed as well. Heavier moisturizers may need to be traded for lighter-weight ones. You may be able to increase the use of retinoids in your regimen during warmer months due to improved tolerance.
