Acne prevention tips from Traditional Chinese Medicine

Suffering with acne? You are not alone! According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Acne is a very common skin condition that causes pimples mostly on the face, forehead, chest, shoulders, and upper back. There are a variety of causes including genetics, fluctuating hormone levels, stress, high humidity, and using oily or greasy personal care products. Acne commonly affects teenagers, but can occur at any age.” The most debilitating consequence of having an acne condition is that it can affect your confidence and self-esteem. This is one reason to treat it at its onset.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acne is energetically caused by the stagnation of chi (life force) or overheating of the lung, stomach, and blood. Hormonal changes are considered heat and are yang in nature. Treatments with success when treating for (yang) stress, which is one of the causes of acne, are acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Do visit a TCM doctor for your individualized program.

During normal hormonal changes, acne can be challenging. Your genetics can also determine whether acne will be difficult to control. But some things can be helpful in preventing or limiting breakouts:

  • Wash your face morning and night, with warm water and a mild clean facial cleanser.

  • Routinely use moisturizer that contains pure ingredients that you trust.

  • Keep your face a “hands-free” zone.

  • Limit your stress by taking time out for meditation or yoga.

  • Create harmony at home by surrounding yourself with soft colors from nature.

  • Explore acupuncture with a Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor or Master.

Most of all, remember that you are beautiful - inside and out. Remember that self-assurance develops over time from the ebb and flow of our experiences. Both yin and yang are needed to create a balanced life. There will be sun and there will be rain. There will be lightness and there will be darkness… and if you experience acne, you will also experience clear, radiant skin in the future. Learn more at www.ecochi.com.
