How To Winter-Proof Your Wellness Routine

Winter has finally arrived and as the air continues to get colder, especially for those of us in more northern areas, it’s often difficult to have the motivation to keep up with your daily routine. It’s especially hard to maintain the same wellness activities that seem so simple when the weather is favorable.

We talked to six of our favorite girl bosses — all the way from sunny California to snowy Canada —  and asked them about the difficulties they face when transitioning into colder weather. Here’s what they had to say!

SAMANTHA SHEINSON

Tell us your name and a little bit about you.

My name is Samantha Sheinson Smalling and I am a style blogger in New York City. I've been living in the city for over 7 years. I first moved to New York to start my career in fashion buying. Over time, I realized I preferred the creative side of the fashion industry.

What is the name of your platform?

It’s @thenyblonde.

How does your skincare routine change during the colder months?

During the warmer months, I use just a serum and oil for hydration. Now that the season is changing, I'll include a light lotion to seal in the hydrating properties of my routine.

What are some your favorite fall “self-care” activities?

I love receiving monthly facials. I generally book facials that involve micro-current to retain firmness and tightening, but in the Fall I'll incorporate oxygen facials for extra hydration. Oxygen facials work to keep the skin extra hydrated. It's important for your skin to stay hydrated to combat the bitter cold of New York's winter. The summers tend to be more humid, so my skin is more susceptible to retain its natural moisture as opposed to the winter.

How does your diet change when moving into Fall?

Unfortunately, my diet starts to involve heavier meals during the colder months. I try to balance all the holiday eating with daily greens and lighter meals throughout the day.

Do you tend to focus more or less on wellness during the colder months?

I probably focus more on wellness during the colder months. In fact, I exercise more often in the colder months than the warmer months. Because I eat heavier foods in the winter, I try to burn off the calories more aggressively with daily workouts.I prefer to focus more on wellness in the colder months because it takes me all year to get back in shape for the summer season! In all seriousness though, New York winters are extra brutal on the body, so it’s best to focus on wellness during those months. I wouldn't necessarily say I need to compensate for anything specifically. It's easy to stay indoors during the winter season, always using the cold weather as an excuse. During the summer I'll take long walks around the city and enjoy outdoor activities, but the bitter, cold winters make it hard to take part in the same summer activities. It’s easy to enjoy the summer sun, but we need to take extra steps to enjoy similar wellness activities in the winter. Whether that is a mini-vacation or even sitting in a steam room; any way to keep the body feeling stimulated helps.

SHELCY JOSEPH

Tell us your name and a little bit about you.

My name is Shelcy Joseph and I’m a social media content manager by day and creative storyteller the rest of the time.

What is the name of your platform?

It’s @nycxclothes.

How does your skincare routine change during the colder months?

During the winter, I tend to moisturize more often because as the temperatures drop, so do the moisture levels of my skin.  I use highly hydrating products in the areas that need them most such as my joints and lips.

What are some your favorite fall “self-care” activities?

Some of my favorite fall activities include: long warm baths, reading under a cozy blanket while drinking hot chocolate, taking self defense classes. I find that these types of activities are super helpful in the fall because they keep my body active while stimulating my mind.

How does your diet change when moving into Fall?

I eat more warm foods. Soup, ramen etc.

Do you tend to focus more or less on wellness during the colder months?

How does your skincare routine change during the colder months?

Luckily in LA, the weather doesn't drop down below 40 degrees. But my skin gets extra dry during this time of year (and I endlessly miss my Mediterranean tan skin). I use a face oil and moisturizer in the morning and night. I also will bring along a rose water mist spray with me on the go.

What are some your favorite fall “self-care” activities?

I love walking my dog during this time of year. Especially when the mornings are a little overcast and gloomy. I leave my phone at home and treat myself with a coffee, and a walk along Echo Park lake.

How does your diet change when moving into Fall?

My diet is similar all year round. I try to eat whole organic meats, veggies, and fruits. I try to limit dairy and gluten, because my skin is very sensitive to it. My favorite fall dinner is my lemon turmeric chicken soup. I use butternut squash noodles, and hearty veggies like carrots and celery. Whenever I am sick, this is my go-to dish to make me feel better.

Do you tend to focus more or less on wellness during the colder months?

It goes through waves for me- I tend to travel more during this time of year, due to the holidays. I think it can be challenging to take care of yourself when you're on a plane or staying in a hotel. What I focus on is finding time to move my body and trying to fuel myself with whole foods. Also sleep is what keeps me healthy but that can be the hardest part to maintain. I have been journaling more often too, which calms my mind and brings me focus for the day.

How does your skincare routine change during the colder months?

As the weather starts getting cooler, I spend a little bit more time hydrating my skin. It’s so easy for the crisp air to dehydrate fragile areas of the skin such as joints etc.. Moisturizing my skin is definitely key during the colder months.

What are some your favorite fall “self-care” activities?

A few of my favorite "self-care" activities revolve around spending quality time alone. All I need is a hydrating face mask, a glass of red wine, and a good movie. These types of activities are necessary for my peace of my mind.

How does your diet change when moving into Fall?

Because, it’s colder outside I’m less and less inclined to eat out therefore I usually cook at home. This then positively changes my diet as I’m more in control of the produce that I consume.

Do you tend to focus more or less on wellness during the colder months?

I focus more on wellness during the colder months because it’s so important to have time to focus on yourself.

AUGUSTINE PILON

Tell us your name and a little bit about you.

My name is Augustine Pilon, I am a 25 year old content creator – fashion stylist freelancer and a university student. I am a lover of vintage, especially everything from midcentury and the 70s. I live in Montreal in a cute little apartment that is also the place where I create most of my content.

How does your skincare routine change during the colder months?

Winters are usually really cold here in Canada. Thereby, I focus on hydrating my skin every single morning and night, plus I always keep a sample of my favorite cream in my bag so I can hydrate whenever I want during the day. During the summer, I use a light cream and as colder days arrive, I switch to a more hydrating cream for my dry skin. I started to use Immunocologie Day Cream since approximately 2 weeks and I am a 100% sure that it will now become my new favorite winter cream.

What are some your favorite fall “self-care” activities?

I try to take self-care moments every single day after I come back from school. I usually just start my essential oils diffuser, open my light therapy lamp and automatically feel better. When I have more time, I chill in a (really!) warm bath while drinking a glass of red wine and reading my favorite book. Oh and I love to light up fresh balsam scented candles !

How does your diet change when moving into Fall?

I love to cook and I could say that I am a pretty good chef ! When Fall arrives, I usually make homemade seasonal vegetable soups and comfort food recipes such as quiche and shepherd’s pie.

Do you tend to focus more or less on wellness during the colder months?

Definitely more !!! I tend to find the lack of sunlight pretty difficult, so I focus on taking care of myself with small things to feel better. Life goes so fast ! We tend to run against time everyday so it’s important to be able to stop and take time for ourselves. Health is not something we should take for granted and I try to remember that as much as I can.

ANOUK SAVOIE-COTE

Tell us your name and a little bit about you.

My name is Anouk Savoie-Côté. I grew up and still live in Montreal, Canada. I am currently pursuing my CPA designation and have a fascination for skin care products and tools.

How does your skincare routine change during the colder months?

Canadian winter makes my skin very dry and dull during the colder months. My skin definitely needs the extra hydration. To fight the dryness, I use hyaluronic acid and a rich moisturizer every night. More specific to the colder months, I make sure I exfoliate 2-3 times a week to get rid of the dead skin cells and let healthier cells develop.

What are some your favorite fall “self-care” activities?

Diffusing oil in my apartment is a way for me to decompress from work and school. When the days are getting colder, a warm bath after a long walk outside is also one of my favorite self-care activity.

How does your diet change when moving into Fall?

My diet doesn’t change much from one season to another. I am a firm believer that you are what you eat. I eat as much fruits and veggies as possible and try to stay away from processed food. Also, WATER, WATER, WATER.

Do you tend to focus more or less on wellness during the colder months?

My skin definitely needs extra care and love during the colder months. I really try to listen to what my skin needs and adjust my routine in consequences. Skincare is so personal and constantly changes. I believe it is very important to focus on your own concerns when building your routine.

The amazing thing about wellness is that it can look different for anyone- whether it be daily walks with the pup for one or long baths for the other. There is simply not one way to achieve inner peace. Take it from these girl bosses!
